Welcome to Cance!

Greetings from your Residence Director:

Welcome to Cance! Cance is a Residential First Year Experience (RFYE) cluster and home to the Media, Art & Culture theme. Cance is one of the smaller halls on campus. As such, you will easily get to know your floormates and hallmates within a few short weeks. As a Media, Art & Culture student in Cance, you will be expected to contribute to making your home a safe, secure, fun, and academically-oriented living environment. There is always so much to do - you will never be bored! Join House Council, apply for a job in the Cluster Office, become a Community Leader, attend an activity, or help put up a bulletin board. This is your new home. Get involved and make it yours!

I am Kelly Lough and I have the pleasure of being your Residence Director (RD) while you live in the Cance Cluster here at UMass Amherst! As your RD, I am committed to building a positive living and learning community for all students. I am especially known for my baked goods which randomly appear the Cluster Office throughout the year. One of my favorite times is when students stop by my office to ask questions or just to say hello, so be sure to introduce yourself! You can find me in my office, which is located on the first floor, room 103A.

The Cance staff is committed to helping you with your transition into college. We have information on topics such asregistration, housing, campus jobs, transportation, campus organizations, finding the best and cheapest restaurants, to how to get to the movie theaters, or where to hike. My staff and I can point you in the right direction! Our very talented Residence Life staff consists of 1 Assistant Residence Director (ARD), 1 Cluster Office Manager (COM), 9 Resident Assistants (RAs), and 3 Peer Mentors (PMs). All of the staff are here to make sure you and the entire community are having a positive living experience. Make sure you get to know your RA and PM - they will both be valuable resources for you during the year!

Additionally, as part of the Residential First Year Experience (RFYE), we are very fortunate to have a First Year Experience Specialist (FYES), Alexa Mignano, and a Residential Learning Graduate Assistant (RLG), Stacy Schiller, who provide direction for many of the academic initiatives that take place in Cance. They work with our Peer Mentors (PMs) to promote cademic success in the residence halls through activities, study groups, and individual conversations. Our FYES, RLGA, and the PM staff are amazing resources for you during your first year of college. Stop by the Residential Academic Success Center on the 2nd floor of Cance to meet the Peer Mentor staff!
