The University of Massachusetts is the sixth largest
housing program in the nation, housing approximately 11,400 students
in 45 residence halls.
The Northeast/Sylvan/North area captures
the spirit of the oldest and the newest residential construction
on campus. Thatcher House was built in 1935, making it the oldest
residential structure on campus. In the fall of 2006, the North Apartment complex was opened and is the newest addition of residence halls to campus since the 1970's.
Over the course of the next ten years,
the University wants to increase enrollment by approximately 5,000
students. To accommodate such an ambitious increase in student
enrollment, the University plans to renovate existing residence
halls and undertake new construction. In addition to expanding
the capacity of the residence halls, Housing and Residence Life
spends millions of dollars every year
upgrading the existing residence hall infrastructure to
provide safe and comfortable living arrangements
for all students.
