Welcome to the Van
Meter/Butterfield Cluster!
Greetings from your Residence Director:
My name is Colby Fisher and I am the Residence Director (RD) for Van Meter/Butterfield (VMB). My background is in Psychology, Women's Studies, and School Counseling. I work closely with a wonderful team of Assistant Residence Directors (ARDs), Resident Assistants (RAs), the Cluster Office Manager (COM), and Cluster Office Staff to provide an environment that is safe, inclusive, respectful, and engaging.
The staff is here to assist you with day to day concerns, share campus resources, offer support, and maintain policies that allow you and your hallmates to have a positive residential experience. VMB is also home to a staff of Peer Mentors (PMs) and Residential Learning Graduate (RLG), Amanda Fowler who work with your academic interests to foster learning, support, and collaboration with faculty.
We want you to think of Van Meter and Butterfield Residence Halls as safe places in which to live, sleep, study, and laugh.
As a first year student at UMass Amherst you will have opportunities to make new friends, become an active part of the cluster via VMB House Council or Community Leaders, and to choose among a long list of registered student organizations (RSOs). Check out the RSOs at http://www.umass.edu/csd/. We hope that you will take advantage of the resources and activities that the Van Meter/Butterfield Cluster and UMass Amherst have to offer.
Once you arrive on campus, please feel free to stop by my office in Van Meter 118. The staff and I look forward to a great year with you!

Greetings from your Assistant Residence Directors:
Hello new students! We, Allison Gagne and Brittany Haughton, are your Assistant Residence Directors! Our main duties are to supervise the cluster Resident Assistants (RAs) and manage the overall functioning of our residence halls, Van Meter and Butterfield. Most importantly, we are here for you, to serve as resources, to make your transition to The University of Massachusetts Amherst as smooth as possible, and to help make your first year here a fulfilling one.
I, Allison, am new to The University of Massachusetts Amherst like many of you, having recently returned from 3 years in hot and humid Houston, TX, where I volunteered at a foster care agency. Prior to that, I received my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary/Special Education from Rivier College in Nashua, NH. While there, I was a Resident Assistant for two years. Among other things I was the Student Government Treasurer and founder and captain of the cheerleading team. I am excited to be back in New England and back on a college campus. This year, I will also be studying to earn my master's degree in Higher Education Administration/Student Affairs. I am eager to get to know each of you and learn what unique qualities you bring to our university!
I, Brittany, am a first-year graduate student in the Master of Architecture program, specifically studying inclusive design. I earned my Bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in Interior Design through CAD and Art History through the BDIC (Bachelor's Degree with Individual Concentration) department. Previously I was a Resident Assistant in the Brett/Brooks Cluster for four years. I have also worked as a Peer Advisor for Undeclared Advising doing academic advising for new and transfer students for the previous four years. I am excited to be working with new students in the Residential First Year Experience Halls, specifically Culture and the Arts (Van Meter) and Writing and Literature (Butterfield)!
Please feel free to stop by our office, located on the first floor of Van Meter, room 120! We look forward to meeting you and hope you have a rewarding first year experience.
