Welcome to Van Meter/Butterfield!
Greetings from your Residence Director:
My name is Colby Fisher and I am the Residence Director (RD) for Van Meter/Butterfield (VMB). This is my third year as an RD and fifth year working for Residence Life at UMass Amherst. My background is in Psychology, Women's Studies, and School Counseling. I work closely with a wonderful team of Assistant Residence Directors (ARDs), Resident Assistants (RAs), the Cluster Office Manager (COM), and Cluster Office Staff to provide an environment that is safe, inclusive, respectful, and engaging.
The staff is here to assist you with day to day concerns, share campus resources, offer support, and maintain policies that allow you and your hallmates to have a positive residential experience. VMB is also home to a staff of Peer Mentors (PMs) and Residential Learning Graduate (RLG), Amanda Fowler who work with your academic interests to foster learning, support, and collaboration with faculty. We want you to think of Van Meter and Butterfield Residence Halls as safe places in which to live, sleep, study, and laugh.
Van Meter hosts the "Culture & the Arts" RFYE Theme. Many Van Meter residents chose Van Meter for our commitment to dance, music, studio arts, art history, and the humanities. Whether your interest stems from a hobby or major, you'll find supportive staff, unique spaces, and amazing events that promote your talents and those of your hallmates. Butterfield is home to the "Writing & Literature" RFYE Theme. Butterfield offers opportunities to join a journal, participate in small writing seminars, and to study in a quaint environment. Our staff offers opportunities to discuss film and literature outside of the classroom, forums to share your writing, and other unique programs that span a variety of interests. Together, Van Meter and Butterfield form a stimulating, enriching community that works as one to offer residents an incomparable first year experience.
As a resident of VMB, you will have opportunities to make new friends and become an active part of the cluster. Consider getting involved via VMB House Council, VMB Community Leaders, serving as an eco-rep, working in the Cluster Office, or performing at a cluster open mic! We hope that you will take advantage of the resources and activities that the Van Meter/Butterfield Cluster and UMass Amherst have to offer. Once you arrive on campus, please feel free to stop by my office in Van Meter 118. The staff and I look forward to a great year with you!

Greetings from your Assistant Residence Directors:
Hello new students! We, Allison Gagne and Brittany Haughton, are your Assistant Residence Directors! Our main duties are to supervise the cluster Resident Assistants (RAs) and manage the overall functioning of our residence halls, Van Meter and Butterfield. Most importantly, we are here for you, to serve as resources, to make your transition to The University of Massachusetts Amherst as smooth as possible, and to help make your first year here a fulfilling one.
I, Allison, am a second year Master’s student in the Higher Education Administration/Student Affairs program. Prior to UMass, I received my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary/Special Education from Rivier College in Nashua, NH. As an undergraduate student, I was an RA, Student Government Treasurer, and the founder and captain of the cheerleading team. I then spent three years in hot and humid Houston, TX, where I volunteered at a foster care agency. I am excited to be back in New England and pursuing my future as a student affairs practitioner. I am eager to get to know each of you and to learn what unique qualities you bring to our university!
I, Brittany, am a second-year graduate student in the Master of Architecture program, concentrating on inclusive design. I earned my Bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in Interior Design via the BDIC (Bachelor's Degree with Individual Concentration) department. As an undergraduate student, I served as an RA for four years and acted as a Peer Advisor for Undeclared Advising. I enjoy working with new students in the Residential First Year Experience, specifically the “Culture and the Arts” and “Writing and Literature” themes!
Please feel free to stop by our offices. Allison Gagne is located 117A Van Meter (inside the Cluster Office). Brittany Haughton can be found in 120 Van Meter. We look forward to meeting you and hope you have a rewarding first year experience.
