Welcome to the Van Meter/Butterfield Cluster!
Greetings from your Residence Director:
My name is Marguerite Phillips
and as the Residence Director (RD) for the Van Meter/Butterfield
cluster, I am committed to providing
an intellectual and socially responsible community. My job is to
oversee the Van Meter and Butterfield residence halls and supervise
Assistant Residence Directors (ARDs), Resident Assistants (RAs),
and a Cluster Office Manager (COM), while collaborating with the
First Year Experience Specialist (FYES) for the Residential First
Year Experience (RFYE).
The main focus of my position is to collaborate
with our staff and with you to foster an environment that is respectful,
truthful,
and open to all cultures, races, religions, abilities, genders,
socio-economic statuses, and sexual orientations. We want you to
think of the Van Meter and Butterfield residence halls as safe
places in which to live, sleep, study, and laugh. There are an
abundance of opportunities that your first year at UMass Amherst
will provide! Opportunities to make new friends, to become an active
part of the residence halls, including Van Meter/Butterfield House
Council and Community Leaders, and to get involved in one of these
Registered Student Organizations (RSOs). Check out the RSOs at
http://www.umass.edu/campact/list.html. Our staff seeks to encourage
critical thinking with the application of knowledge developed in
the classroom to real life circumstances. We strive to nurture
an environment that is conducive to each student’s intellectual
and emotional growth, their development of a strong sense of personal
responsibility, and their active involvement in community living.
We hope that in this, your first year of college, you will take
advantage of the many resources and activities that the Van Meter/Butterfield
Cluster and UMass Amherst have to offer.
What’s my background?
I like to think of myself as a Renaissance woman: I have my Associates
degree in Culinary Arts from Johnson & Wales
University, a Bachelors degree in Marketing from Bryant University,
and my Master’s degree is in Urban and Environmental Policy
from Tufts University. I have been a chef, a corporate sales person,
and I have worked in a health policy and research organization
for children with special health care needs. I discovered my love
of working with college students as a graduate student and Resident
Director (RD) at Tufts. I love that I can combine all of the skills
I have acquired over the years while providing learning opportunities
for students. Once you arrive on campus please feel free to stop
by my office, located on the first floor of Van Meter, room 118,
with any questions or requests. The staff and I look forward to
a great year with you!

Greetings from your Assistant Residence Directors:
Welcome
to Van Meter/Butterfield! We are Brian Koslowski and Alina Torres-Zickler
and we are the Assistant Residence Directors (ARDs)
for our cluster.
I, Brian, am a third-year Master’s student
in Higher Education Administration, with a focus on Service Learning
and Civic Engagement.
This will be my ninth year at UMass Amherst! I graduated in 2003
with degrees in Psychology and Communication through Commonwealth
College, and then worked as an Assistant Director of Undergraduate
Admission. I enjoy live music, independent films, running, and
working with and advising students.
I, Alina, am a second-year doctoral
student in the Social Justice Education department. I love exploring
the New England area (I
have lived in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts thus far!)
and look forward to trying out new things! In the past I have worked
at the University of Vermont, where I received my Master’s
degree, and the University of New Hampshire, where I was a Hall
Director, before I came back to school last fall as a doctoral
student.
ARDs serve a variety of functions – from supervising
Resident Assistants (RAs) to assisting with community programming
and administrative
work. Our main purpose is to act as a resource as you begin your
new adventure at UMass Amherst! Once you arrive on campus please
make a point to stop by our office, located on the first floor
of Van Meter, room 117A, and say hello! We look forward to meeting
you!
