Arts Grant Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Arts Grant Program?
- In a continued effort to provide residents with a
well-rounded selection of hall-sponsored events the Residence Life Arts
Grant Fund was created. The purpose of the fund is to provide Residence
Life staff members with additional resources to plan educational arts
events for in-hall residents.
What
kinds of events are eligible for Arts Grant funding?
- Most educational arts events are eligible! This
includes theatrical productions, dance performances, open microphone
nights, and trips to
museums. Last
year staff took residents to the Nuyorican Poet’s Café in
New York City and to see A Raisin in the Sun in Hartford, Connecticut.
Residents also went to see Miss Saigon, Cats, and more at the Mullin’s
Center as well as Chi and the Shanghai Circus at the Fine Arts Center.
Several groups also learned how to create their own art at the craft
center right here on campus.
- The primary purpose of the Arts Grant program is to get residents
out of the halls and into the community to experience the arts! The Arts
Grant
program is designed to fund community based arts events, rather than
events that are based inside of the residence halls.
Are there any events
that are not eligible for Arts Grant funding?
- Arts events will not be funded at venues where the primary
focus tends to be alcohol.
- Social arts events, such as popular music events or in-hall
T-shirt decorating, will not be funded with Arts Grant monies. Staff
members wishing
to organize this type of event can seek other funding sources such as area money
and/or general RA programming money.
Where can I get ideas for events?
How can I apply for Arts Grant funding?
- All you need to do is fill out a quick one-page application
and send it to Dawn Briggs, Business Manager for Residence Life at briggs@gw.housing.umass.edu.
- To receive an electronic application, you may contact
Dawn Briggs, Business Manager for Residence Life at briggs@gw.housing.umass.edu.
All RDs, ARDs, Area Directors, Apartment Professional Staff and Residence
Life Specialists also have access to Arts Grant applications on the Residence
Life shared drive.
How much funding
can I apply for?
- There is no set limit on the amount of funding available for
any one event. However, grants last year ranged from $50.00 for some
smaller events to
$700.00 for a couple of larger events.
- Funding for each Arts Grant event is partially determined on
a cost per. student basis. For example, if there is an event that costs
$50.00
per. participant, students will most likely be asked to subsidize
part of their
event cost. However, if there is an event that costs $12.00 per.
resident, the entire event cost is more likely to be covered for
the students. The
cost per. student of an event is an important factor in determining
the total amount of grant money that will be provided for an event,
however it is not the only factor. Other factors include the quality and
educational
content of the event being planned as well as the other funding
sources that are available to the applicant.
How will I know if my Grant is
approved?
- You will receive a written response to your application within
one week of applying for funding.
I have a great idea for a staff development
activity that involves the arts! Can I apply for an Arts Grant for
my event?
- The primary goal of the Arts Grant program is to increase resident
attendance at arts events. The most direct way to reach this goal is
by planning
events for residents to attend. Therefore, Arts Grant money cannot
be used for
staff development events, however, arts grant money can be used
to cover the cost of attendance for any staff member(s), including Apartment
Professional
Staff, ARDs, RDs, RAs, and ALAs who are planning and organizing
an
arts event for residents.
