Residence Life Community

Housing and Residence Life: Overview

Housing and Residence Life is the department within the Division of Student Affairs and Campus Life responsible for the administration of residential programs and buildings affiliated with the University. These include residence halls and apartment complexes for student families. Housing and Residence Life is responsible for the physical management of University-owned structures (residence halls and family housing) and for the “human management” of all students living in these buildings. In addition to the implementation of general administrative activities such as finances and purchasing, publications, personnel, long-range planning, staff training, and the like, our Department is responsible for the following specific functions: housing assignments, custodial services, property maintenance and repair, damage billing, educational programming, counseling and referral, and student conduct. Housing and

Residence Life serves over 12,000 students.

Housing and Residence Life: Location

The central administrative office for the Department is located in Berkshire House. It is a small building located across Massachusetts Avenue from Southwest Residential Area. Additionally, decentralized offices exist in the residential areas or close to them where the day-to-day administration of the structure and programs occurs.

The residence halls are grouped into five Residential Areas: North, Northeast/Sylvan, Southwest/South, Orchard Hill/Central, and Southwest/North. Administration is provided locally by five Area Offices. Maintenance and Operations and Residence Life staff share these central offices together.

Area Office Telephone Number
North 5-7100
Northeast/Sylvan - Johnson 5-0290
Southwest/South - Cance 5-0702
Orchard Hill/Central - Baker 5-1333

Additionally, the Residence Life Programs Office is in 101 Moore. The Residence Life Resource Center is in 104 Moore. The RLRC number is 5-0472.

Residence Life Resource Center (RLRC)

The Residence Life Resource Center is a resource center for Residence Life staff and residential student leaders in their efforts to promote community, diversity, leadership and student development within the residence hall communities.

The center has, staff development tools (games, stress relief toys), bulletin board kits, an Ellison letter press, poster making supplies, computer and color printer, button maker, label maker and a black and white copier are among the many resources available to staff and student leaders. Our resource center hours for the 2007-2008 academic year are:

Monday - Thursday 10:30am – 7:00pm
Friday 10:30am – 5:00pm
Sunday 4:00pm – 8:00pm

A RLRC satellite targeting NE/S/N staff members is located in Leach basement.

Please keep in mind that all work done in the RLRC MUST BE RA RELATED.
RLRC resources and supplies should not be used for personal or academic reasons.

RLRC Etiquette

  • When making copies, please limit yourself to 25 copies.
  • When using the color printer, please limit yourself to one 3 page color banner or 3 color signs.
  • RLRC supplies stay in the RLRC. You should have tape, scissors, stapler, etc. available to you from your RA kit and should not need to take such items from the RLRC.
  • When using the letterpress, check on the shelf above the press to see if there are any precut letters already for you to use.
  • Clean up after yourself. Recycle what you can and throw away the rest.
  • Only take 2 bulletin board kits at a time. Recycle kits you have already used by sharing them with a fellow RA.
  • To check out a video, game or book please fill out the appropriate form and see a member of the RLRC staff. Return items on time so others can use them.
  • Plan ahead and be patient. At certain times of the year, the RLRC can get very busy (opening, end/beginning of the month). During these busy times, it is important that you have patience as you might have to wait to use certain resources. Also, be courteous of others by sharing and being aware of how much time you may be using a particular resource.
  • SMILE and say thank you! It brightens everyone’s day!
