Mission and Goals of Residential First-Year Experience

The Residential First-Year Experience (RFYE) is a year-long, structured, residentially-based program for first year students, designed to smooth the transition to UMass Amherst. Participation in RFYE builds connections with the campus and pride for the University community. We encourage our students to be involved and participate in campus events and activities, while preparing students to take ownership for their academic and personal development.

First-Year Residential Choices and Application Guide

Welcome to UMass Amherst and the Residential First-Year Experience! The Residential First-Year Experience is a unique living experience that will give you an edge to help you make the most of your time here at UMass Amherst.

RFYE strives to assist First Year Students with:
• Making Connections at UMass Amherst
• Transition to College Life
• Academic, Career and Life Planning
• Civic and Community Engagement
• Leadership Skills and Involvement

From the moment you arrive on campus in September, you will be part of a welcoming community of first-year students, staff, instructors and faculty members. Your learning won't just happen in the classrooms of academic buildings, it will also be a big part of your time in the residence hall.  You will live amongst other students who both share common interests and experiences as well come from a variety of different backgrounds and perspectives.  By living with a diverse group of your peers, you will engage in conversations and explore new ideas while building meaningful connections with your hallmates.

The staff in your hall will be available to provide academic and personal support as well as special activities and events that will help you become familiar with campus and successfully navigate course work. You have the option to further your residential learning experience by joining a Residential Academic Program (RAP) within your first year hall as well. Depending on the program you choose, you may even have classes taught right inside your hall. You will find that living in the Residential First Year Experience makes your learning one of our top priorities!

Your time in college is also about fun. In addition to all of the support toward your academic success, you'll see that living in a community of other first-year students is really fun! When it is time to put the books away, there will be lots of programs, events, and trips to keep you busy and having a great time.
Housed in five different residential areas (Northeast, Southwest, Central, Orchard Hill and the Commonwealth Honor College Residential Community), the Residential First Year Experience offers a variety of living and learning opportunities. Take some time to explore the many options for your Residential First Year Experience. We look forward to meeting and working with you!
