Safety & Security
Fire
Safety
Fire safety depends on everyone. All residence
halls are equipped with fire safety equipment designed to help
with your safety.
The University employs a full-time staff
of fire prevention professionals.
They inspect all campus buildings and test and maintain all
fire systems and equipment.
Each room has a smoke detector installed.
Reporting any problems with the detector and keeping it uncovered
ensures safe operation.
Only use allowed appliances to avoid overloading
the wiring. Candles and open flames are not allowed in the residence
halls. Please

Endangering
behavior, such as false alarms or tampering with fire safety
equipment, may not only result in your
dismissal
from housing,
but in legal action as well.
Fire Alarms
When the fire alarm sounds, evacuation is required.
This is necessary for your safety and the safety of the firefighters,
University
police officers, Environmental Health and Safety staff, and
the Housing Services staff who respond. During an evacuation, please
keep the following in mind:
It is important that you familiarize yourself
with procedures for evacuating your residence hall before you need
to evacuate in an
emergency. Take a few minutes, go out into the hallway and
find the nearest exits from your room.
