Application and Room Assignment Process for New Graduate Students
New graduate students are assigned to shared rooms and will have a roommate. To apply for a room assignment graduate students must submit an application. Complete the application in all areas. Please print clearly and sign your application. We require that your application include the following information:
- Your UMass email address. Room assignment and other important Housing information will be sent to you using this email address.
- An answer to the U.S. felony conviction question. We cannot process your application without your response to this question.
- Enclose a non-refundable prepayment of $100.00 U.S. funds. This amount may be subject to change. Payment must be made by Bank Check or U.S. Postal Money Order. This amount will be applied to the cost of rent. You will not be assigned to a room until we receive this prepayment.
Return your completed application and prepayment to the Housing Assignment Office, 235 Whitmore Administration Building, University of Massachusetts, 181 Presidents Drive, Amherst, MA 01003-9393.
Application Process for Graduate Students enrolled in CPE Summer Session Courses
For Summer Session I classes the fee for a shared room is $728.00. The fee for a private room is $898.90. The required telecommunications fee for summer session students is $40.
Summer Session residents may check in to the graduate residence hall on Sunday, June 1 from 7-11pm. Room keys are available in the lobby from the hall staff member on duty. Summer Session I concludes on Thursday, July 10 and check out is required by 11pm. No Summer Session I resident will be allowed to remain after 11pm Thursday, July 10, unless full payment has been received for Summer Session II.
To reserve a space, the Graduate Residence Hall Application accompanied by full payment is required by Friday, May 9, 2008. Payment must be made by Bank or Cashiers check in U.S. currency, or by U.S. Postal Money Order. No personal checks can be accepted.
For Summer Session II classes the fee for a shared room is $709.80. The fee for a private room is $876.40. The required telecommunications fee for summer session students is $40.
Residents may check in to the graduate residence hall on Sunday, July 13 from 7-11pm. Room keys are available in the lobby from the hall staff member on duty. Summer Session II concludes on Wednesday, August 20 and check out is required by 11pm. No Summer Session II student will be allowed to remain after 11pm on Wednesday, August 20.

Payment must be made by Bank or Cashiers check in U.S. currency, or by U.S. Postal Money Order. No personal checks can be accepted. In addition to submitting a housing application and sending the $100 prepayment, new graduate residents seeking to accommodate either medical or disability need must also do the following:
1. Contact one of the three on-campus agencies that submits housing accommodation requests to the Housing Assignment Office:
- Students with a disability such as a mobility impairment, learning disability, or other condition covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act should contact Disability Services at 545-0892. You will meet with a consumer manager to discuss the nature of your accommodation needs and will submit medical documentation directly to Disability Services.
- Students with a psychological disability should contact Psychological Disability Services at 545-0333. You will meet with a staff member to discuss the nature of your accommodation needs and will submit medical documentation directly to Psychological Disability Services.
- Students with a need for a medical accommodation while recovering from surgery or who have other medical conditions must contact the Housing Assignment Office at 545-2100 and request a Health Services Recommendation Form. Complete the first part of the form. Send the form to the health care provider. Ask your provider to complete the form and send or fax it to University Health Services where it will be evaluated.
- If you are unsure which agency to use, contact the Housing Assignment Office for more information.
2. After completing the above process, email Heather King, the Athletic and Medical Assignment Manager hking@gw.housing.umass.edu or call her at 413-545-2100 to verify that the on-campus agency forwarded a housing recommendation on your behalf. Include in the email the following information:
- Your name, student ID, cell phone number, and best email address
- The kind of accommodation you are seeking (single, double w/roommate, close to bathroom etc.)
Any additional information you would like known about your accommodation needs or preferences.
Notification of Assignment
In most instances, when a completed application and prepayment is received graduate students will receive room assignment notification via email within 7 days. This process may take longer in cases where medical or disability accommodations are being requested.
New residents are assigned, space permitting, as applications are submitted. Notification of Spring 2008 Assignments will be sent by email beginning Monday, January 7, 2008.
Graduate Residence Hall Contract
Graduate students who live on campus are required to sign a Graduate Residence Hall Contract. This contract outlines the residential living obligations of both you and the University. No graduate student will be permitted to move in until a signed Contract Card is received.
The Contract is a specific and legally binding document. Make sure you read the Contract thoroughly. If there are parts of the Contract that you do not understand, please call the Housing Assignment Office at (413) 545-2100 and ask for clarification.
The Contract is signed by signing and returning the Graduate Residence Hall Contract Card. This Contract Card will be mailed to the address provided on the Graduate Housing Application when a completed Housing Application is received. Sign and return the Graduate Residence Hall Contract Card to the Housing Assignment Office, 235 Whitmore Administration Building, University of Massachusetts, 181 Presidents Drive, Amherst, MA 01003-9393.
