Why Recycle

Every time you throw an item away, it must either be buried or burned. Both methods of dealing with rubbish have become extremely problematic in the present. Landfill space has become limited and burning rubbish releases toxins into the air.

Recycling, on the other hand, allows the materials to be manufactured again to make more useful products. Recycling avoids the costly side effect of burning and burying rubbish, reduces the amount thrown into landfills, cuts back on emissions, and reduces disposal and production costs.

UMass Amherst, through recycling efforts by student and staff, annually conserves 45,000 gallons of oil, saves 20,000 trees and avoids $200,000 in disposal charges.

As a member of the UMass community, help make our university a leader in the effort to recycle and protect the environment.
