1.

How do I access cable TV in my room / apartment?

All student rooms and on-campus apartments are equipped with a CATV outlet. If you have a cable-ready TV, simply connect your television to the wall outlet using a standard coaxial cable, also called a RF cable. To receive all of the CATV channels, use the menu command to select CATV (not antenna) and AUTO program. Refer to your television User's Guide for additional set up information.

If you are using an older, non-cable ready TV, you will need a cable-ready VCR or cable converter box to use as a tuner to receive all of the CATV channels. If you don't use a VCR or converter box, you will only receive channels 3 through 13. (see How do I hook up cable and my VCR? for setup instructions.)

If you have difficulties connecting your cable please call our office at 5-4803 and a customer service representative will help you. Our office hours are 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

2.

Where can I find a list of channels that are included in the on campus cable service?

You can find the HSCN Channel Guide on our website at www.housing.umass.edu/hallserv/hscn.html

3.

My reception is bad! How can I fix it?

Make sure your cable is properly connected to the wall outlet and to the TV or VCR. If using a VCR or converter box make sure that your TV is tuned to channel 3. If you continue to have trouble, call our customer service number at 5-4803. We'll assist you over the phone or, if necessary, send one of our service technicians to your room.

4.

How do I hook up cable and my VCR?

To hook up cable through your VCR, you will need two coaxial cables. Connect one cable from the wall outlet to the INPUT jack on the VCR. Then connect the second cable from the OUTPUT jack on the VCR to the INPUT jack on the TV (see diagram below).

Setup diagram for connecting cable through a VCR.

5.

I only receive channels 3 - 13. Why?

If you have a cable ready TV, you must have your TV set to CATV, CABLE, or STD. To do this, set the switch on the front or back of your TV or VCR, OR using your remote, select "SETUP" or "MENU" and set the on-screen display accordingly.

6.

Where can I find information about what's happening on campus?

YouMassTV on Channel 78
YouMassTV is now on channel 78. Campus residents can find out about campus events and much more.

7.
