The Department of Residence Life's comprehensive training programs, job responsibilities, and expectations recognize and address the developmental needs of new and returning Residence Directors. Our overall objectives are grounded in the integrated guiding principles of sensitivity to issues of diversity, student development theory and practices, community development and ethical responsibility. Residence Life is committed to supporting and advancing Residence Directors in their professional development. Professional development is provided through:

  • New Residence Director Orientation
  • August and January Training for all RDs
  • New Professional Seminar (six sessions first semester)
  • Supervision (Performance, Planning, Goal-setting, Coaching, Assessment, Evaluation and Recognition)
  • Residence Director Skill Advancement Worksheet
  • Mini-conferences, In-services and Brown-Bag Lunches
  • Professional Development 1:1's
  • Recruitment and Selection
  • Committee Work
  • Participation in Organizational Development (Assess, Plan, Implement, Evaluate)

Residence Director - Second Year Job responsibility emphasis is on cluster development and residence life program development. The professional development focus is on self-exploration, empowerment strategies, networking, and professional identity.

  • To support and assist in the leadership of delivering the mission, goals, values, and culture of Housing and Residence Life at UMass
  • To provide leadership within the residence life team and model productive interactions with all staff
  • To become more familiar with the UMass organizational structure, including work with other campus departments
  • To serve as a member of departmental committees, possibly chairing a committee
  • To serve as a member of campus-wide committees
  • To contribute to RD and ARD training through presenting, mentoring, etc.
  • To participate in searches through interviewing and serving on search committees
  • To apply critical thinking to improve systems and projects that will help move the department forward
  • To demonstrate competencies learned
  • To participate in Residence Life internship program and/or adcomp opportunities
  • To network and explore possible next-step job opportunities
  • To become involved in a professional organization and attend/present at a regional or national conference

Residence Director - Third and Fourth Year Job responsibility emphasis is on cluster development and residence life program development and leadership. Professional development focus is on professional and personal transitions; with an emphasis on advancing to the next career level.

  • To support and assist in the leadership of delivering the mission, goals, values, and culture of Housing and Residence Life at UMass
  • To provide leadership to the residence life team and model productive interactions with all staff
  • To become more familiar with the UMass organizational structure, including work with other campus departments
  • To serve as a chair and manage department-wide committees/projects/tasks
  • To participate in searches through interviewing and serving on search committees
  • To serve as a member of campus-wide committees
  • To contribute to RD and ARD training through leadership, presenting, mentoring, etc.
