Residence Director's Roles

Each year the Housing and Residence Life department seeks qualified applicants for the Residence Director professional position. We are currently seeking applicants for the 2009-2010 academic year. Below is a description of the position as well as detailed information on how to apply.

The University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applicants for the position of Residence Director. The Residence Director is a full time professional staff member with live-in responsibilities that include the comprehensive management of the residential program that is safe, caring and socially just for the 275-675 students housed in 1-3 residence halls. Responsibilities include: coordination of a dynamic student development program with an emphasis on leadership and community development; promotion of diversity-sensitive approaches in all aspects of the position; supervision of graduate and undergraduate staff; opportunity to serve and chair department and Student Affairs committees; management of facilities systems; and the implementation of student disciplinary procedures.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in a related field such as Student Development, Higher Education or Counseling plus one academic year post-baccalaureate experience required at time of hire as a live-in staff member to include crisis intervention and work with diverse student populations; demonstrated experience and initiative with student and community development; supervision and staff training; advising student groups; creation and implementation of management systems; demonstrated commitment and ability to create inclusive communities that are sensitive to diverse populations. This is a 43-week live-in position, which requires some evening and weekend work plus on-call/call-back duty.

Hiring Salary

$30,663 cash salary for a 43-week position, additional compensation ($1174) for on-call responsibilities, plus a furnished apartment valued at $4,200 (the value of which is considered part of the total compensation package), professional development funding, and benefits including tuition waiver options.
