Room Assignment Information

Residence Hall Opening and Closing

The dates and procedures for check in and check out are important. Students and their families should plan their arrival and the departures according to information provided below.

Spring 2015 Residence Hall Closing Information

All Residence Halls will close at 8:00pm on Thursday, May 7, 2015.  Failure to vacate by this time will be subject to a $150 Unauthorized Occupancy Fee.

May Closing Checklist

Permission To Stay Late
Students with a legitimate reason to remain on campus after halls have closed can submit a permission to stay late request at www.housing.umass.edu.  Graduating seniors and Commencement Volunteers are automatically coded and have been emailed with confirmation.

Room Inspections
Residential Life Facilities Operations staff and Environmental Health and Safety will conduct inspections of rooms after the halls have closed. Inspections consist of visual surveys of rooms. Illegal items and other policy violations in plain view will be documented and referred to the appropriate authorities.

Card Access
Card Access will expire at 8:00pm on May 7, 2015.  If you have been issued a Temporary Card, please return it to your Residential Service Desk to avoid a $40 card replacement charge.

Mail and Voice Mail
Mail delivery will end on.  Packages and Mail that are received after this date from USPS will be forwarded for the home address listed in SPIRE.  Voicemail is deactivated on Monday, May 11, 2015 and is not available over the summer.

Room Assignment Cancellation Information

Students Going on Exchange Or Internship for Fall 2015
Students going on a University Sponsored Exchange or Internship are encouraged to cancel their spring housing assignment within 10 business days of their acceptance to the program.  Exchange and Internship students who cancel within this time will have the Cancellation Fee Waived.  Students who are going on Exchange or Internship, and cancel after this time will be subject to the cancellation fee schedule.

UMass students who go on exchange or internship are also guaranteed the opportunity to select on-campus housing if they submit an Eligibility Form prior to halls closing on May 7th at 5:00pm.  The Eligibility Form is available Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm, at Residential Life Student Services, 235 Whitmore.

Students Planning to Live Off Campus, Transfer to Another University or Take Time Off
Fall Residents who may not live on campus for the fall are encouraged to cancel their assignment by 5:00pm on April 30th, 2015 for the minimum $100 Cancellation Fee. 

Seeking an Exemption:
Required students who are planning to live off campus for fall semester must break their on-campus requirement for fall 2015.  Students who are living at home with a parent/guardian can complete the Commuter Exemption Form.  All other students must submit a Housing Exemption.  Students who currently hold an assignment are are seeking an exemption are subject to the cancellation fee and are strongly encouraged to submit their exemption request by 5:00pm on April 30th to be eligible for the minimum $100 Cancellation fee.

Lincoln Apartments Closing Information

Lincoln Apartments will remain open over the summer months for Graduate Students.  Students who have indicated to Residential Life Student Services their plan to remain in their room are not required to check out. Graduate students who do not plan to remain over the summer are expected to check out by no later than 8:00pm on May 30th

Undergraduate Students assigned to the Lincoln apartments are expected to vacate by no later than May 7th at 8:00pm.

Lincoln Apartments Cancellation Information

Students Planning to Live Off Campus, Transfer to Another University or Take Time Off
Current Residents who may not live on campus for the fall are encouraged to cancel their assignment early to ensure more space is available for new graduate students. Students who cancel their assignment will be subject to the $300 Forfeited Grad Prepayment fee.  Graduate Students must then remove their belongings from the space and turn in their key by no later than August 14th at 8:00pm.

Students who cancel their assignment after August 14th will be expected to complete a full check-out within 2 business days to complete a check-out. 

Failure to check out appropriately prior to August 14th will result in a $150 Blocked Room Fee applied to the student’s Bursar bill.  Students who do not check out within 2 business days of cancellation will also be subject to Improper Check-Out Fees based on the date that you clear your space.
